Windy condition is expected to enhance over the island, particularly in Southern and North-central provinces and Rathnapura, Kaluthara and Trincomalee districts and the central hilly areas up to (60-70) kmph at times.Wind speed can increase up to 60 kmph at times elsewhere.Showers or thundershowers will occur at times in Western, Central, Sabaragamuwa, Southern and North-western provinces.Heavy falls about 100 mm are likely at some places particularly in Sabaragamuwa and Western provinces and Nuwara Eliya, Galle and Matara districts.Several spells of light showers will occur in Anuradhapura and Mannar districts.Showers or thundershowers may occur at a few places in Uva province and Ampara district after 2.00 pm.There may be temporary localized strong winds during thundershowers. General public is kindly requested to take adequate precautions to minimize damages caused by lightning activity.On the apparent southward relative motion of the sun, it is going to be directly over the latitudes of Sri Lanka during 27th of August to 07th of September in this year. The nearest towns of Sri Lanka over which the sun is overhead today (30th) are Kudiramalai Point, Medawachchiya, Rathmalgahawewa, Kulumiwakada, Kappalthurai and Foul Point about 12.12 noon.

Special traffic arrangement on Marine Drive tomorrow

A special traffic arrangement will be in force on the Marine Drive in Colombo, during certain hours, tomorrow (30), stated the Police Spokesperson.The special traffic arrangement will be enforced from 7 am to 9 am in the morning and from 4 pm to 6 pm in the evening, tomorrow.This special traffic plan is implemented due to an international conference held near the Bambalapitiya Railway Station.The conference is scheduled to be held from the 31st of August until the 10th of September.

Hambantota Port evaluates container handling options

Hambantota International Port, a Public Private Partnership project (PPP) between the Sri Lanka Ports Authority and China Merchant Port Holdings is currently evaluating the options of handling containers.In addition, the bunker facility at the port will be operated by ChinaSinopec Fuel Oil Sales Co. Limited (SFO).&We&re all saying that the port of Colombo is congested but there is more room for efforts to be made for the three terminals to cooperate and that cooperation can definitely create more capacity until such time the East Container Terminal (ECT) comes on track. I firmly believe that cooperation between the three terminals is a must,& Tissa Wickramasinghe, Chief Operating Officer at the Hambantota International Port Group (HIPG) told the German-Sri Lankan Logistic Conference held in Colombo yesterday.

Government schools to reopen September 2

All government schools countrywide are scheduled to reopen on September 2, the Ministry of Education has stated in a circular.However, schools that are being used for the evaluation of the G.C.E. (A.L.) Examination answer scripts are to be reopened on September 16, the circular read.Accordingly, the Kurunegala St. AnneCollege, Colombo Royal College, Colombo Nalanda College, Colombo Hindu College, Kalutara Gnanodaya College, Ratnapura Mihindu College, Kandy Kingswood College, Kandy Seetha Devi College, Galle Vidyaloka College, the Vihara Maha Devi Balika Maha Vidyalaya, and the Badulla Uva Maha Vidyalaya, would be closed until September 15, the ministry stated.

PM calls for more liberalization towards market economy

The gathering comprised many civil servants, law makers and experts in numerous fields.
