‘Sri Lanka commits to achieving SDGs&

Sri LankaPermanent Representative of the United Nations Economic and Social Commission of Asia and the Pacific (UNESCAP) Samantha K. Jayasuriya said Sri Lanka has taken keen interest in promoting mutual dialogue and collaboration among member states to ensure maritime safety, particularly safe and peaceful navigation in the Indian Ocean, sustainable fishing, reducing ocean pollution among others. The country has enacted the Sustainable Development Act in 2017 and is incorporating Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) in to its national policies she said. She assured that Sri Lanka will look for more intense collaboration with the Commission in areas of mutual interest.

Joint efforts needed to combat extremist propaganda via cyber tech& & Defence Secy

States should collaborate closely to combat incitement and the spread of hate and violent extremist propaganda through the use of modern information and communication technologies, Defence Ministry Secretary Gen. (retd) Shantha Kottegoda told the opening session of the Colombo Defence Seminar in Colombo yesterday. The two-day ‘Colombo Defence Seminar - 2019,& the 9th in sequence commenced at the BMICH yesterday (29), under the theme ‘Evolving Military Excellence in the Contemporary Security Landscape&.President Maithripala Sirisena, Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces as the Chief Guest graced the inaugural ceremony at the invitation of the Commander of the Army, Lieutenant General Shavendra Silva. Foreign participants, representing 42 countries were scheduled to attend with 13 foreign and 14 local speakers. However, Colombo-based diplomats of several western nations had reportedly absented themselves from the formal Seminar inauguration yesterday morning.

Lanka to sign several agreements with the Maldives

Sri Lanka and the Maldives are scheduled to sign several agreements during the Sri Lankan Prime Minister's official visit to Malé next week. Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe will be undertaking an official visit to the Maldives on 2 September 2019, on an invitation from President of the Maldives Ibrahim Mohamed Solih to chair the Indian Ocean Conference 2019.

President to be conferred honorary degree today

Weather advisory: Strong winds and rough seas

The Department of Meteorology today issued a weather advisory for strong winds and rough in certain sea areas around the island.The sea area extending from Hambantota to Kalmunai via Pottuvil and the sea area extending from Puttalam to Trincomalee via Mannar and Kankasanturai can be rough at times as the wind speed can increase up to 55-60 kmph at times. Temporarily strong gusty winds up to 70-80 kmph and very rough seas can be expected during thundershowers, it said. Naval and fishing communities are requested to be vigilant in this regard.
