Speaker Meets Secretary General of Commonwealth

Karu Jayasuriya the Speaker of Sri Lanka Parliament met Patricia Scotland, Secretary General of Commonwealth at his official residence last Monday Dhammika Dasanayake, Secretary-General of Parliament of Sri Lanka and Neil Iddawala, Chief of Staff and Deputy Secretary-General of Parliament , Jayantha Jayasuriya, PC, Chief Justice, Dappula Prashantha Joseph de Livera ,Attorney General of Sri Lanka, Jayanthi Wijethunga, Secretary of Ministry of Justice and Prison Reforms and Ahmed A. Jarward, Additional Secretary, Multilateral Affairs, Ministry of Foreign Affairs were attendees of the event. Meanwhile, Josephine Latu & Sanft, of Commonwealth Secretariat accompanied the Secretary General of Commonwealth.

Ballot papers delivered to EC

The ballot papers have been handed over to the Election Commission by the government printing press, said the Government printer Ganga Kalpani Liyanage. 17 million official ballot papers have been submitted for 22 districts.The printing of this yearPrez poll official ballot papers have been successfully completed. &The printing of the other documents related to the election have already commenced, we expect to hand them over to the elections commission soon&, said the Government printer.

Over 1100 SLTB buses for transporting ballot boxes

Around 1,100 buses have been requested for transporting ballot boxes for the presidential election.According to the request of the Election Commission, the buses will be deployed for this purpose , said the Sri Lanka Transport Board DGM (Operations) P.H.R.T. Chandrasiri.

Sri Lanka to establish a national system for Geographical Indications

The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) and the Ministry of Primary Industries and Social Empowerment of Sri Lanka have launched a project aiming to establish a national system for Geographical Indications (GIs).GIs help consumers identify food and other products originating in a particular geographical location, which have unique characteristics, qualities or reputation linked to that location. Well-known GIs include Champagne, from the Champagne region of France, Kampot pepper from Kampot, Cambodia, and Pinggu peaches from the Pinggu district near Beijing, China.

Southern Expressway extension to be open

Southern expressway extension will be opened tomorrow, according to the Road Development Authority. The Andarawewa interchange and extends to Mattala via Hambantota. And the other roads can be accessed through the Barawakumbuka, Sooriyawewa, Andarawewa interchanges and Mattala - Hambantota entrance.This extension will provide the experience of switching from one Expressway to another for the first time in Sri Lanka.Accordingly, the public will be able to use the road from Friday midnight.

Remove face cover when entering polling centres: EC

Muslim women can wear either the burqa or niqab when they come for voting but should remove their face cover at the entrance to the polling centre, Election Commission (EC) Director General Saman Sri Ratnayake said.Speaking to Daily Mirror, he said what was required was to prove her identity inside the polling centre when she was given a ballot paper.
